Abstract

This study presents the development of a multidimensional measurement scale of student engagement in a sequence of learning activities in secondary education. Developed in collaboration with the teaching team in a Quebec secondary school program, the scale includes behavioural, emotional, cognitive, agentic, and social dimensions of student engagement in the classroom. It was tested with 595 students in all secondary school grades. Exploratory factor, internal consistency, and confirmatory factor analyses on two subsamples (n1 = 290; n2 = 305) provided validity evidence for the internal structure of the scale in the five above dimensions (first-order model), as well as for an overall student engagement factor (second-order model). Evidence of the measurement invariance of the scale across gender, subject, and sequence duration is also presented, as well as evidence of consequences of score interpretation and use in the proposed context. Thus, this study provides a robust instrument for measuring student engagement in the classroom, in a sequence of learning activities, providing detailed information to teachers, researchers, and decision makers.
